Teaching transparency in English

Sample open access materials: designed to provide a taste for the online course.

Course overview

The course is designed to help students develop practical language competencies for professional contexts, with an emphasis on the Fashion, Energy, Transport, Health, and Pharmaceutical sectors. It includes an introductory module followed by three core modules, each  centred around the different sectors and different skills (receptive and productive). The materials are based on Harmer’s (2007) Engage-Study-Activate (ESA) approach, which promotes active and structured language learning through engagement, focused study, and practical application.

The course structure allows students to choose their own learning paths based on their needs and interests. For example, they may navigate through the online materials in the published order, complete all activities related to a specific sector before moving on to a different sector, or focus first on receptive skills across sectors before moving on to productive skills.

The aim of the introductory module is to provide agency for learners when using the materials, encouraging them to think about how they will navigate the materials.  Learners are introduced to the concept of transparency and encouraged to reflect on the language of transparency as well as explore the differences between transparency and accessibility. For information on the three core modules see the sample materials below.
